- Brandon's Emergency Preparedness Lists -
I have compiled the following lists to assist EVAC members in developing there own emergency preparedness kits. This list should be used as a guideline and add or remove items as you see fit. Many of these items can be purchased at your local surplus store, drug store, outdoor and sporting goods stores.

Aircraft/Car Kit
- First Aid Kit (see below)
- Heavy duty work gloves
- Goggles or protective eye wear
- Dust mask
- Good pocket knife with plyers
- Food (MRE's, freeze dried, or emergency bricks)
- Water
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Compass
- Candles, long burning
- Cooking fuel
- Paper, pens (Sharpies), paper clips, rubber bands
- Duct tape, 5-10 ft, wrap around a water bottle, pencil or dowel
- Leaf bag, large
- Matches, in a water proof container. Strike-anywhere type matches are best, others require the striker from the package be included in the waterproof container. Not all matches use the same striker.
- Plastic bags, ziplock, qt. size, for kit, water, etc.
- Cash, ATM machines may be unavailable
- Plastic sheeting (for shelter material)
- Rain pancho
- Whistle
- Solar Blanket
- Water purifier drops or tables
- Zip lock bags of various sizes
- Signal mirror (shaving mirror)
- Safety pins, large
- Insect repellent, small bottle
- Lip Balm, with sunscreen (Chapstick® or similar)
- Measuring device, 18 in minimum (a small cloth measuring tape is ideal, you can also mark a walking or tracking stick to measure with.
- Metal cup or pot - a military canteen cup is ideal, especially if it has the little stove base.
- Nylon twine or small rope, 50 ft. like parachute cord.
- Sunscreen lotion, small bottle, at least SPF 15
- Tissue Paper (toilet paper). Small roll, remove the cardboard core, store in a plastic bag.
- Webbing, 20 ft length of 1-in climbing type webbing, for emergency harnesses or utility uses.
- Wire, 5-10 ft, woven steel (picture hanging wire) for emergency repairs
- Handheld FM Transceiver, AA battery packs, cigarette lighter charging cord
- GPS (handheld) and spare batteries

Home Kit
All of the items in your travel kit plus:
- An emergency plan including phone numbers, meeting locations and personal information
- More food
- More water
- More cash
- More duct tape
- More plastic sheeting
- Pet food, if you have a pet you should also have a leash or carier available plus any specifics for your pet. Please note that most disaster shelters do not allow pets so you may be living out of your car.
- Extra batteries
- Tools for shut off water, gas and power
- Crow bar
- Large bucket (store all your items in the bucket. I have a bucket with an toilet seat cover to be used for emergency sanitation needs with garbage bags.
- Fire extinguisher
- Red spray paint
- Garbage bags for personal sanitation
- Hand crank radio
- Playing cards
- Plyers
- Rope

First Aid Kit
In addition to a standard small first aid kit I have added
- Rubber exam gloves (at least 3 pairs, store in a plastic bag)
- CPR mask
- Hand sanitizer (small bottle)
- Acetaminophen or aspirin tablets (4 or more)
- Antacid and anti-diarrheal tablets (such as pepto-bismol tablets)
- Antiseptic cleansing pads (2)
- Moleskin (small piece, about 3x4 inches), or a Spenco® blister kit
- Roller Bandage, gauze type
- Cotton Swabs, non sterile (Q-tips® or similar)
- Splinter forceps, tweezers
- Towlettes, clean (wet wipes)
- Personal Medications
- Oral glucose
- Chewable asperin
- Sanitary pads
- Sam splint
I also have a full medic kit which is similar to what EMT's use in the field.
